Journalism Faculty Focus on News & Miami Spaces

One of the U.S. regions with the most disproportionate rates of luxury and poverty, Miami is in trouble, according to two Journalism + Media professors who are releasing new works – a documentary and a book – about South Florida. And all of this emerges at a time of immense sea level rise, which deepen these gaps.

Hed: Documentary Examines Racial Gentrification

In November 2016, Dr. Moses Shumow released a documentary, “Liberty Square: Power, History, & Race in Miami”  that focuses on the struggles and successes of Liberty Square, a housing project in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.

This documentary, culminating several years of Shumow’s community work in Liberty City, includes efforts of students from Journalism + Media, as well as music by CARTA’s Orlando Garcia.

“Liberty Square: Power, History, & Race in Miami” was also a strong focus of several of Shumow’s courses and involved editing and content created by recent graduates.

See the documentary’s website for a trailer and for a full-length version of the film, future screening dates, and more about the project – and others – from Liberty City.

Hed: New Book Explains Neoliberal Influences

Also in November 2016, Shumow, along with Dr. Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. , published News, Neoliberalism, and Miami’s Fragmented Urban Space , which uncovers and interrogates how media – in an era of globalization and the rapid acceleration of free market ideologies – are both harnessed by and are complicit in the capture and re-appropriation of spatial consciousness.

At the center of this critique of neoliberalism’s role in the transformation of Miami’s neighborhoods and the city’s mediatized geographies is an emphasis on the role of news media as a means for promoting a very specific, and yet often veiled, political and economic agenda.

Gutsche and Shumow have published other research together about news discourses related to Miami and its racial and economic divides, including articles in the Journal of Urban Affairs and in Visual Communication.

The two have, together and as individuals, presented this work at international conferences and in their courses. See their work also at shatterbe.lt.
