Raul Reis

Raul Reis, Ph.D., dean and professor, is a veteran journalist and academician. Reis is a native of Belém, a city in the Brazilian Amazon region. He earned his bachelor’s in Mass Communication (Journalism) from Universidade Federal do Pará, in Brazil; his master’s in Journalism and Mass Communication from Kansas State University; and his Ph.D. in Communication and Society from the University of Oregon. Reis worked for more than eight years as a newspaper, TV and magazine reporter and editor at several Brazilian news organizations. During that time, he covered politics, sports, city news, and science & the environment, among other topics. In the U.S., he worked as a copy editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as an ASNE fellow, among other journalism jobs. He joined the California State University system in 1997, first at the Monterey Bay campus, and later at the Long Beach campus, where he worked from 2000-2011. At Cal State Long Beach, Reis taught news writing, research methods, global news media, media ethics, mass communication theory and digital journalism, among other courses. Reis also taught summer courses that included trips to Brazil. His most recent summer courses have focused on science & environmental journalism, and included a two-week trip to the Amazon forest. Reis has published extensively in academic journals and books on topics such as the impact of mass media on traditional communities; Latin American and Brazilian media; journalism education; and science and the environment. His academic articles have appeared in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Science Communication, World Communication Journal, Environmental Communication, and the Journal of Intercultural Communication, among others. He has co-authored a book titled “Mass Communication: Producers and Consumers”, and is currently under contract to write a book on “Writing and Reporting for Digital Media.” Reis has contributed chapters to four edited academic books, and his research has been reprinted in specialized encyclopedias. Dr. Reis earned tenure at CSULB in 2002-2003, and promotion to full professor in 2007-2008. He served as department chair from 2007-2011.
